Verdure Tapestry
Manufacture Royale d’Aubusson (Central France), c. 276 x 238 cm, about 1690 - 1700, tapestry depicting the biblical scene of ‘Moses in the Bullrushes’: about 3000 years ago, the Egyptian Pharaoh commanded that all Israelite (Hebrew) children be drowned in the River Nile, but Moses’ mother placed her baby in a basket of rushes, and the river carried the child away until he was subsequently found by the Pharaoh’s daughter. A series of five hangings depicting the seasons, all featuring the same border, is preserved at Bruchsal Castle in Germany. Manufactured in a coarse weave, but complete all around, with several repairs, the outer galloon has been filled in, a border with suspension device is attached to the upper section on the back.
