Very Large Egyptian Standard Top with Bes and Monkeys

Ptolemaic Period, 332-30 BC. A large glazed composition figure of the god Bes, squatting on a lotus-headed column, bearded, grimacing and wearing a tall crown with five black-tipped feathers; surrounded by several monkeys climbing over him; pierced laterally above the ears, above the feathers and below column to mount on a standard; supplied with a custom-made stand. See Bulte, J. Talismans égyptiens d'heureuse maternité, Paris, 1991; and Une amulette est conservée au musée de Philadelphie (Inv. E14358"). 231 grams, 18cm including stand (7"). Property of a French gentleman; previously with Sotheby's, New York, lot 10, 8 June 1994 (US$10,000-15,000); previously in an old American collection; accompanied by copies of the relevant Sotheby's catalogue pages.
Condition Report: Very fine condition. Extremely rare in this size.
