Very fine landscape painting, signed - including kiwame-bako - Attributed to Watanabe Kazan (1793–1841) - Japan - Late Edo period
Watanabe Kazan (1793 – 1841) was a Japanese painter, scholar and statesman member of the samurai class. Born in Edo to a poor samurai family. His family served the lord of the Tahara Domain, where he advanced his career and rose to the rank of the chief retainer. His artistic talent was developed from an early age and to help with family expenses, Kazan did sideline work by painting pictures. He studied painting with Shirakawa Shibayama and Tani Buncho, and while studying various painting methods, he showed talent in sketching genres. He also studied Western painting methods, and especially demonstrated his depth of insight and sharpness of brushstrokes in portraiture. He had many students such as Tsubaki Chinzan and Fukuda Hanko.
His works could be found in numerous museums worldwide.

Kaburagi kakoku (1868-1942) was japanese style painter. Born in Aichi Prefecture. He studied under Watanabe Shoka and learned Nanga. He was especially skilled at painting flowers and birds. He strove to honor Watanabe Kazan, supervised an exhibition of his writings, and published ``Watanabe Kazan's Book of Writings. '' He passed away in 1942 at the age of 74.
