Very fine painting "Tits and season flowers", signed - including inscribed tomobako - Matsumura Keibun (1779-1843) - Japan - Late Edo period

Matsumura Keibun was a painter of the Shijo school in the late Edo period. He was born in Kyoto in 1779. He was younger half-brother to Goshun, founder of the Shijo school, and first learned painting from him. He lived in Shijo and served at the Myohoin Temple. He specialized bird-and-flower painting. Keibun inherited Goshun's studio when he died in 1811, and brought to the prosperity of the Shijo school. By 1813, he was listed in a directory of Kyoto's most notable citizens. He died in 1843 at the age of 64 and was buried beside the Goshun tomb at Konpuku-ji Temple.
His works could be found in many museums worldwide including British Museum, the Seattle Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Portland Art Museum, the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Honolulu Museum of Art. . .
