BIOGRAPHY OF THE ARTIST

Sculptor and painter. He studied at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia, excelling in drawing and sculpture, achieving first prizes and cash pensions.

He was a disciple of López Mezquita. In 1913 he was transferred to the Spanish School in Rome by the Provincial Council of Valencia, where he was awarded the annual Sculpture Prize. Around 1918 he settled in Barcelona for having won the Chair of Sculpture at the School of Fine Arts by competitive examination. In 1943 he was appointed professor at the Sant Jordi School of Barcelona, holding the position of professor between 1950 and 1958.

In 1944 he published the book Sculpture Technique within the collection Manuales Meseguer, Enrique Meseguer, editor of Barcelona, and in 1957 Encyclopedia of drawing within the collection Enciclopedias de Gassó, De Gassó Hnos. Editores, Barcelona.

His work is extensive, with numerous commissions. Over the years he acquired a certain tendency towards stylization, which his early works did not have. He executed a large number of busts of important personalities, statuary and secular, religious and funerary monuments for the Valencia cemetery. The positive influence of Mediterraneanism led him to search for realistic values in form along with a certain sensuality. In 1924 he studied and made polychrome portraits, believing that the complement of color had undeniable realism.

He attended various competitions, obtaining honorable mentions and medals. In 1908 he lived in Valencia and presented the plaster works Cansancio and the Bust of D. Salvador Giner at the General Exhibition of Fine Arts and Artistic Industries in Madrid, a work for which he obtained Honorable Mention. In 1910, living in Barcelona, he participated in the National Exhibition of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Madrid with the plaster works Añoranzas—a group that was awarded the Third Medal—and Portrait of my mother. At the Regional Exhibition of Valencia in 1910 he presented the busts of the poet Teodoro Llorente and Salvador Giner, and a statue, Sola, which won the First Medal. In 1912, residing again in Valencia, he presented Monument to Beethoven and Sketch of the same, to the National Exhibition of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Madrid, and was awarded the Second Medal. In 1914, through a national competition, he was awarded the Medal of the Círculo de Bellas Artes of Madrid. He obtained First Medal at the National Exhibition of 1915 with Aurora, which was acquired by the State for the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid. At the 1920 National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid he was part of the jury of the sculpture section as a member. At the Barcelona Art Exhibition of 1921 he presented Torso of a woman in marble. In 1921 he made the statue for the monument to the Valencian musician Giner, resolved in a remarkably classical way. In January 1926 he exhibited at the Galerías Layetanas with Carlos Vázquez Úbeda. He was a member of the executive committee of the International Exhibition of Painting, Sculpture, Drawing and Engraving at the Barcelona International Exhibition of 1929, in which he presented Madonna in marble and Don Quixote in bronze. In January 1934 he exhibited at the Galerías Layetanas, and in March of the same year the Sala Gaspar held an exhibition of his drawings. He obtained the Medal of Honor at the Regional Exhibition of Valencia in 1935. At the Exhibition of Religious Art held at the Artistic Circle in 1940, he presented Dolorosa, carving and polychrome marble. In January 1942 he exhibited twenty-two sculptures and twenty-seven paintings in the Spanish Galleries. Standing out in the artistic exhibition were his works Torso in stone, Pietà in polychrome wood, Virgin of the Dawn, Maternity in baked clay, Torso in basalt, Diana in bronze, La toilette, and the paintings Burial of Christ, Eve, Girl with the Rose , Slave and Rest. In 1947 he won the National Prize at the Painting and Sculpture Exhibition.

In January 1948 he exhibited fifty works at the Grifé & Escoda Galleries, among them: Women's heads, in marble and bronze, Female heads in polychrome marble and bronze, Girl with the dove, Sibyl, and Maruja in polychrome baked earth, Carved Gypsy in wood, Oriental, and Nude of a woman in bronze, Dolorosa in marble and polychrome wood, Torso of a woman in basalt, Generalissimo Bust, Modistilla in wood, Motherhood in baked earth, Don Quixote of la Mancha, and Manolete in bronze. He carried out various official works, especially in Barcelona: statues that decorate the Bank of Spain, the National Palace, the Pati dels Tarongers of the Generalitat Palace, the stone high relief of the Marathon gate in the Montjuic stadium; Maternidad and Montseny statues in the Plaza de Catalunya in Barcelona; the symbolic group of the Alhucemas Landing, a work gifted to the Ministry of War by the Marquis of Foronda; the Peris-Mencheta plaque for journalists from Barcelona, which was awarded for the first time in 1951 and the group erected in Granollers in memory of the soldiers killed in Africa. He portrayed, among others, Francisco Franco and the Count of Barcelona. He was awarded the Medal sketch of the Círculo de Bellas Artes of Madrid, which was to serve as a prize in competitions.
