When the Petite Galerie of the Louvre was destroyed by fire in February 1661, Louis XIV's architect Louis Le Vau was commissioned to reconstruct the room, with Charles Le Brun and Francois Girardon providing the paintings and stucco. Work was finished in 1673. This magnificent gallery so impressed the king that in 1678 he commissioned a grander version of it as the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles.
