The French author invites a friend to dinner, and has a quick afterthought that he turns into a postscript: "Quand je dis vou, je dis vous deux. J'espère que madame de Banville me permettra de lui baiser le main" ("When I say you, I mean you two. I hope that Madame de Banville will allow me to kiss her hand"). Though the letter is unaddressed and undated, the recipient is likely Théodore de Banville, French poet and long-time friend of Victor Hugo.
