Victoria 1860 Gold Sovereign Large 0 - Rare
UNITED KINGDOM. Victoria, 1837-1901.
Gold Sovereign, 1860. London. Large 0.
Second young head of Victoria facing left, hair tied in fillet; date below truncation, with large 0; VICTORIA DEI GRATIA. / Crowned shield within wreath; thistle, rose and shamrock below; BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:.
The large zero in the date illustrates the variations in numeral punches and date arrangement found on sovereigns of the early 1860s. Alongside corrected and misaligned letters, these differences reveal inconsistencies in die preparation during the years preceding the introduction of numbered reverse dies in 1863, generally associated with closer production control. The large-zero variety is a difference in the date punch rather than an overdate or corrected lettering error.
Obverse about very fine, reverse better.
Graded 'Rare' in the Standard Catalogue to the Sovereign series by Steve Hill.
