Victoria 1861 Gold Sovereign E over rotated E PCGS XF45 - Very Rare, R2 in Marsh
UNITED KINGDOM. Victoria, 1837-1901.
Gold Sovereign, 1861. London. E over rotated E.
Second young head of Victoria facing left, hair tied in fillet; date below truncation; VICTORIA DEI GRATIA, with E of DEI struck over higher, rotated E. / Crowned shield within wreath; thistle, rose and shamrock below; BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:.
This variety provides another illustration of the hand preparation of Royal Mint dies during the variety-rich period of 1860–62. The E of DEI was initially punched too high and at an incorrect angle before being corrected with a second, properly aligned letter. Rather than discard an otherwise usable die, the Mint placed it into production, preserving the underlying letter as a distinctive feature.
Rated R2 by Marsh, this very rare variety is seldom encountered. Graded PCGS XF45, the present coin is one of only two examples recorded at this level, with seven certified finer.
In secure plastic holder, graded PCGS XF45 , certification number 56278972.
