Victoria 1861 Gold Sovereign Letter O over zero - Very Rare, R2 in Marsh
UNITED KINGDOM. Victoria, 1837-1901.
Gold Sovereign, 1861. London. Letter O over zero.
Second young head of Victoria facing left, hair tied in fillet; date below truncation; VICTORIA DEI GRATIA, with O struck over zero. / Crowned shield within wreath; thistle, rose and shamrock below; BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:.
The sovereigns of 1860–1862 show numerous mistakes in the preparation of dies, including misplaced characters, inverted letters and corrections made with overlapping punches. This 1861 variety, with O punched over a numeral zero in VICTORIA, illustrates how the wrong punch could be selected and then corrected without discarding the die.
These irregularities provide context for the introduction of numbered reverse dies in 1863. Die numbering is generally associated with closer control of production, allowing defective work to be traced more readily. Although a direct link to the lettering errors is not established, the change reflects efforts to improve consistency and accountability at the Mint.
Light scratch on obverse otherwise very fine, reverse better.
Very rare, hence the R2 rarity rating in the Standard Catalogue to the Gold Sovereign.
