Victoria 1861 Gold Sovereign T over V PCGS AU Details - Extremely Rare, R3 in Marsh
UNITED KINGDOM. Victoria, 1837-1901.
Gold Sovereign, 1861. London. T over V.
Second young head of Victoria facing left, hair tied in fillet; date below truncation; VICTORIA DEI GRATIA, with T struck over tilted T or V in VICTORIA. / Crowned shield within wreath; thistle, rose and shamrock below; BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:.
The sovereigns of 1860–62 are renowned among specialists for their numerous repunched and incorrectly entered characters, remnants of an era in which individual elements of the legends and dates were applied to working dies using separate punches. Minor mistakes did not necessarily warrant the destruction of an otherwise valuable die and could instead be corrected before it entered production.
On this variety, the second T of VICTORIA is punched over an underlying tilted character, catalogued by Marsh as T over T or V. Rated R3, or Extremely Rare, in *The Gold Sovereign*, it is one of the more elusive varieties of the period.
Although certified PCGS AU Details, the significance of the present coin rests principally upon the exceptional rarity of its die variety, which is seldom offered in any condition.
In secure plastic holder, graded PCGS AU Details, certification number 56278973.
Extremely Rare, hence the 'R3' rarity grading in the Standard Catalogue to the Gold Sovereign.
PCGS population in this grade: 0.
