Victoria 1871 Gold Sovereign Shield NGC MS 65

[ translate ]

UNITED KINGDOM. Victoria, 1837-1901.
Gold Sovereign, 1871. London. Shield.
Second young head of Victoria facing left, hair tied in fillet; date below truncation; VICTORIA DEI GRATIA. / Crowned shield within wreath; die number and national emblems below; BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:.

The year 1871 marked an important transition in the Victorian sovereign series. Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the Dragon returned to the denomination for the first time since the reign of George IV, while the established shield reverse continued to be struck alongside it. The two designs were issued concurrently at London until the shield type was finally discontinued in 1874.

The present coin retains Jean-Baptiste Merlen’s crowned Royal Arms within a laurel wreath, paired with William Wyon’s enduring Young Head portrait. A small numeral 50 beneath the wreath identifies the individual reverse die, part of the numbered-die system employed upon London shield sovereigns between 1863 and 1874.

Although the combined London output exceeded 8.7 million sovereigns, examples of the shield type are highly desirable at the finest levels of preservation. Graded NGC MS65, the present coin ranks among the very finest certified: there are only three finer on the NGC database.
