Victoria 1887 M Gold Sovereign St George; Small B.P. NGC MS 62

AUSTRALIA. Victoria, 1837-1901.
Gold Sovereign, 1887 M. Melbourne. St George; Small B.P..
Young head left, WW complete on truncation; mintmark M below; VICTORIA D: G: BRITANNIAR: REG: F: D:. / St George on horseback slaying the dragon right, horse with short tail; date and small B.P. in exergue. Edge milled.

The year 1887 marked the transition from Victoria’s Young Head portrait to the new Jubilee bust introduced for her Golden Jubilee. The Melbourne Mint continued to strike the earlier Young Head sovereign alongside the new design, creating a varied and particularly collectable issue for the year.

This St George variety features William Wyon’s initials fully visible on the truncation of the portrait. The reverse employs the short-tailed horse and small B.P. initials in the exergue, distinguishing it from the other die combinations used during the period.

Graded NGC MS62, the present coin is a well-preserved example of the final year of the Melbourne Young Head sovereign. NGC records eighteen certified finer.
