Victoria 1887 Silver Crown Proof NGC PF 63 ULTRA CAMEO

[ translate ]

UNITED KINGDOM. Victoria, 1837-1901.
Silver Crown, 1887. Royal Mint. Proof.
Jubilee head facing left; VICTORIA D: G: BRITT: REG: F: D:. Design by Joseph Edgar Boehm. / St George rearing right, dragon below; date and B.P. in exergue. Design by Benedetto Pistrucci. Edge milled.

The crown formed the centrepiece of the silver coinage introduced during Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee year. For its reverse, the Royal Mint revived Benedetto Pistrucci’s celebrated depiction of St George and the Dragon, originally introduced on the sovereign in 1817 and adapted for the silver crown the following year. Its appearance in 1887 marked the design’s return to the denomination for the first time since the reign of George IV.

Pistrucci’s dynamic neoclassical composition is paired with Joseph Edgar Boehm’s crowned and veiled Jubilee portrait, bringing together designs created almost seventy years apart. Although the new portrait attracted criticism at the time, this combination became one of the defining images of Victoria’s later coinage and established the appearance of the British crown for the remainder of her reign.

Just over 1,000 proof crowns were struck in 1887 for inclusion in sets issued during the Queen’s Golden Jubilee year, and the proof is rated ‘Rare’ in Bull’s English Silver Coinage. Graded NGC PF63 ULTRA CAMEO, the present coin displays exceptional contrast between its heavily frosted devices and deeply reflective fields. NGC records just six finer, placing it among the eight finest examples recorded with the Ultra Cameo designation and a must have for any advanced collection.

In secure plastic holder, graded NGC PF 63 ULTRA CAMEO, certification number 6692681-009.
