Victorian Aesthetic Movement Cake Basket by Webster
Shiny, intricate, over the top cake basket by Webster that shows the imagination of the Victorians.
A heavy base metal cake basket has been silver plated and had a gold wash in the interior. The handle is ornate with floral scrolling and a bead finial. The basket well has a basket weave pattern with the interior sides tooled with scrolls, flowers and a dot edge. The basket outer surface has a repousse band on the lip and a large repousse band at the base edge. The four feet are very ornate with floral flourishes.
There is a stamped mark on the base. It reads; TRIPLE PLATE ON HARD WHITE METAL- ESTABLISHED 1869 WEBSTER BRO and the number 88 .
MEASUREMENTS
12 ¼” (31.1 cm) long x 8” (20.3 cm) wide x 10 ½” (26.7 cm) tall (with handle extended). Weighs 2 lb 1.3 oz (940 g)
CONDITION
There are silver losses and wear scratches. The gold wash is now just a trace in the interior of the basket. The basket has still shined up though. The four feet don’t rest flat, although when at flat on a table, this is not noticeable. The handle stays up on its own.
A fun, ornate, cake basket to serve those lemon bars in. Fancy and functional.
