Victorian Carved Wood Corbel
7 x 20 inches. A single hand-carved wooden architectural corbel, likely salvaged from a late 19th-century mantelpiece or large furniture item such as a sideboard. The piece is constructed from stained softwood with visible end grain and features deep-relief carving in the Renaissance Revival style. The decorative program consists of a central twelve-petal floral rosette surrounded by acanthus-style foliate scrolls, terminating in a volute or spiral scroll at the narrower end. The bracket is designed with a flat back and one flat side for mounting flush against a vertical surface beneath a projecting horizontal element. The mounting surfaces show traces of old adhesive and a single, bent iron nail. Small bore holes are present, consistent with original mounting points or past insect activity.
