Victorian Needlepoint Pole Screen
7 x 12 x 53 inches. A 19th-century adjustable pole screen featuring a dark-stained wood construction. The piece is composed of a rectangular screen frame mounted on a square-section central post with a turned finial. The height of the screen is manually adjustable via a wooden sliding bracket that travels along the vertical post, secured by a wooden friction wedge located at the back of the bracket (photo 4). The central decorative element is a petit point needlepoint panel depicting a floral bouquet with a central rose in shades of pink, yellow, and blue against a sage green background. This panel is mounted onto a secondary mesh support and is hand-lashed to the outer wooden frame with continuous horizontal wraps of twine. The structure is supported by a low, rectangular bench-style base with four splayed legs. The joinery appears to be traditional hand-fitted construction with visible nail heads on the side of the screen frame (photo 5). No maker's marks, labels, or signatures are visible on the piece.
