Artist Vija Celmins (b. 1938, Latvian/American) immigrated to the United States in the 1940s before pursuing arts education in Indiana and at Yale University. In 1962, Celmins moved to Los Angeles to pursue a master's degree at UCLA, a period during which her work evolved into the diligently rendered portrayals of naturally occurring phenomena that she is known for. Celmins resided in the Los Angeles area until 1981 before moving to New York where she currently lives and works.
"Untitled (Ocean)" dates to a period in Celmin's career when she began exploring the possibilities of printmaking when it came to the depiction of natural objects. Celmins has had over forty solo exhibitions and is included in more than 20 permanent museum collection, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Other impressions of this print can be found in the collections of the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Harvard Art Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Condition Report: Overall good condition. With full margins. The uppermost portion of the left margin edge trimmed ever-so-slightly and unobtrusively. A few very soft and unobtrusive handling creases near the upper margin edge, visible only in raking light. A 1" wide, vertical band of extremely pale toning along the left margin edge, visible mostly on the verso. Framed floating and hinged to the back mat at the verso of the upper margin corners.Framed under Plexiglas: 31.5" H x 49" W x 1.5" D Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request.
