Viking Bronze Necklace w/ Pendant - Sigurd & Fafnir
Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A beautiful and wearable necklace constructed with dozens of petite bronze ringlets connected to one another to form an attractive necklace. The lustrous bronze pendant hanging in the center is of an openwork discoidal form with a series of incised striations around the obverse. Depicted on the pendant is a mythological scene of the Norse hero Sigurd slaying the dragon known as Fafnir before claiming the treasure hoard of the Nibelungen. Size (necklace chain): 17" L (43.2 cm); (pendant): 1.2" W x 1.46" H (3 cm x 3.7 cm)
Provenance: private Carmichael, California, USA collection, acquired in the 1990s

Condition Report: Wearable as shown. Both chain and pendant are from the stated period. Losses and damage to some chain links commensurate with age and fragility, with light encrustations, and softening to finer details on pendant, otherwise very good. Nice green patina on chain links, and great surface luster on pendant.
