Viking Bronze Torq w/ Coiled Exterior

**First Time At Auction**

Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A lovely bronze torq (also torc, torque) made from a thick wire that is tightly wrapped in thin bronze wire. The circular accessory has a triangular loop on one end and a twin-lobed fastener on the other end. Torqs like this example and other wearable accessories were not only fashionable pieces of jewelry for the Vikings but also wearable forms of currency. While more valuable items were made from gold and silver, bronze items were still a coveted type of tradable jewelry. Size: 6.25" W x 6.4" H (15.9 cm x 16.3 cm); 7.3" H (18.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private Davis collection, Houston, Texas, USA, acquired before 2013 from various auction houses in London and New York
