Viking Iron Axe Head
Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. An iron axe head with a curved blade, an oval socket perforation with small protruding tabs, and a thick squared butt end. The blade flares to a broad cutting edge. This axe would have been hafted onto a pole or handle to use as a tool. The minimalist design of the axe head suggests it was used for tasks such as splitting wood and shaping softer materials like mud bricks rather than for warfare.
