Viking Iron Ice Creepers & Iron Axe

[ translate ]

Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A gathering of three forged-iron ice cleats known as creepers since the climber had to effectively 'creep' along sheer cliff faces to keep their footing. The rectangular tools have sturdy foot panels lined with protruding spikes that effectively grip the ice, and the loops on each bent terminal allowed the wearer to tightly secure the cleat to their boot. Accompanying the ice creepers is a forged-iron axe with a central socketing shaft, a dense body, and a vertical blade edge. Size (axe): 5.25" L x 2.9" H (13.3 cm x 7.4 cm); (largest creeper): 4.5" W (11.4 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
