Viktor Schreckengost (American, Cleveland School 1906-2008) Jeddu, 1931, bronze with gunmetal black patination, signed Viktor Schreckengost and inscribed 1931 and numbered 5.

23 6/8 in. ht. of bronze 25 1/2 in. ht. including wood base.

Viktor Schreckengost first created this form in plaster in 1931 after photographs his teacher, Paul Bough Travis (American, Cleveland School 1898-1976) brought back with him following his groundbreaking trip to Africa. The bronze depicts Queen Jeddu of the Mangbetu tribe in the Belgian Congo, with whom Travis visited. Legenda, Jeddu's daughter with King Ekibondo is depicted in the lot following (Lot 47).

This piece was cast in 2001 from the original plaster at Light Sculpture Works, Cleveland, Ohio, by Ron Dewey and chased by Paula Blackman, Cleveland, Ohio. With foundry mark LSW and initials PFB inside the cast. This bronze was not cast until 2001 due to the expense of casting such a work. Prior to this cast, Jeddu was exhibited in her original plaster form.
Condition Report: A few shallow scuffs to the patina on the neck as pictured.
