Viñales Meteorite Ordinary Chondrite, L6 Pinar del Rio, Cuba - (22°37.17'N, 83°44.57'W) Fall: February 1, 2019 There is nothing ordinary about this Ordinary Chondrite classified as L6. The 'new' meteorite fell in Cuba earlier this year and is referred to as Viñales for the town most proximate to the fall, which is a common convention for naming meteorites. When the event occurred, a bright bolide was witnessed in that area, along with an extended smoke trail leading some local residents to believe that an airplane had crashed. Fortunately, the reality was a meteorite shower that deposited stones including this specimen weighing 315.3 grams, which actually passed through the roof of a pigsty and landed in a pile of swine manure, just missing three pigs! Aside from its less than illustrious path to Earth, this example displays an outstanding dark fusion crust over much of its brownish-black surface punctuated by several spots exposing the core of the space rock and revealing the interior composition of this unique meteorite with one unique story. Overall Measurements: 3.41 x 2.74 x 1.66 inches (8.66 x 6.96 x 4.22 cm), weighs 315.3 grams [Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
