Vincent Malo

Biography
Little is known about his life. It is known that from 1623 to 1634 he was a pupil first of Pieter Paul Rubens and then of David Teniers the Elder. From 1623 he joined the Antwerp Guild of San Luca.

In 1634 he went to Italy and stopped in Genoa, where he resided for a long time, spreading Flemish culture and the poetics of Rubens in Liguria by frequenting the workshop of the brothers Cornelis and Lucas de Wael, very active in Genoa in the fourth decade of the 1600s.

During his stay in the Ligurian capital he had Antonio Maria Vassallo as his workshop.

Much in demand by clients of the time, both in public and private works, he created several altarpieces for Ligurian churches, such as the Mystical Marriage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria now in the town hall of Sanremo and the Assumption for the church of Santo Stefano. He also painted battle scenes and landscapes, reminiscent of the great decorative compositions of Paul Bril.

Despite the large quantity of his works, marked with his initials composed of an overlapping V and M, many of which have survived to the present day, a monograph and classification of his paintings has not yet been created.

The Capture of Christ is an oil painting on canvas by Antoon van Dyck kept in the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery in Bristol.

Van Dyck painted three versions of the episode of Christ's capture, with few differences between them; the other two are preserved in Madrid and Minneapolis. The moment immortalized by the painter is the one, narrated in the Gospel of John, in which Judas is about to give a kiss to Jesus, just as one of his accomplices is about to put a noose around his neck. The scene is crowded, set in the olive grove at night.
