Vincent de Vos (1829-1875) - Drie hondjes

[ translate ]

Joost-Vincent De Vos (Kortrijk, 1829 - there, 5 October 1875) was a Belgian painter. As an animal painter, he followed in the footsteps of Louis Robbe (1806-1887) . By introducing realism into animal painting, this had influenced a generation of animal painters, such as Edward Woutermaertens (1819-1897) , Valere Verheust (1841-1881) and Louis-Pierre Verwee (1804-1877) . Together these painters formed the Kortrijk Animal School. Joost-Vincent De Vos enjoyed some fame in his time and is especially famous for his many colourful paintings of dogs and costumed monkeys riding on the backs of dogs. Monkeys were also depicted catching fleas of street dogs. Many of his paintings contain some recurring elements, such as musical instruments, shoes and rat-catchers. Most of his paintings are small in size. He usually drew his works as "De Vos", without mentioning his first name. Most of his paintings are privately owned and sometimes end up at an art auction. The Broelmuseum in Kortrijk owns several works by De Vos. Other works can be found in the Museum of Lille ("Pris au piège") and Mulhouse ("Les favoris") . Condition: good. The work has old craquelé which is brought into better condition by a professional bedding. Frame: framed in a gold-coloured ornamental frame. Signed: bottom right. Edition: original. The artwork comes from a collection of a private collector.
