Vintage 1930's 3D Ave. Local New York City Enamel Destination Route Double Sided Subway Platform Sign
Vintage 1930's double-sided enamel New York City subway sign from the 3rd Avenue Local route is an exceptionally rare, museum-grade piece of transit history. In the early to mid-20th century, these heavy, double-sided enamel-on-iron signs were hung directly above platforms or station entrances by the private IRT (Interborough Rapid Transit) company, which operated the original 3rd Avenue elevated and subway lines before the city consolidated them under the NYCTA in 1940. A 22-inch width indicates that this is a station platform "hanging" sign or a subway car exterior route sign (rather than a massive 4-to-9-foot street entrance marquee). Compact signs of this size are highly prized by collectors because they are easier to display in a home, apartment, or gallery setting, keeping their value dense. Please ask specific questions on details, condition, and shipping prior to bidding, ALL ITEMS ARE SOLD AS IS, and the bidder will be responsible for payment. We box and ship what we can to keep costs low, and use USPS and UPS. Large items, extremely fragile, and high value items will be packed by UPS. Quotes available on request
