Vintage American School Mixed Media Illustration Herman Palmer Cheetah Signed, dated 1922, Amsterdam, reclining Cheetah, 7 1/2 x 13 1/2", 17 1/2 x 22 1/2" framed.
The source of the following information is Prof. Emeritus Stuart Palmer (Univ. of New Hampshire), who was the son and only child of Herman Palmer.Herman Palmer was born in Utah in 1894, and died in New York City in 1946. He was originally George Herman Palmer, but dropped the George in adult life. According to his son he never signed his paintings using "George". He came to New York as a young man, and studied art among other places at the Art Student's League. He established himself primarily as a painter of animals, but he also worked with portraits and landscapes. He worked in varied media; i.e. pencil, watercolor and oil. He traveled widely, especially in the 1920's. He moved with his small family to Cornwall, New York in 1931, but moved back to New York City in 1940 (which was enabled through the award of a Guggenheim grant). He spend a short period in Los Angeles in the early 1940's working in circles associated with the film industry. He produced among other items, the still figure of the MGM lion. There is a fine portrait of Palmer by Dickinson currently in the possession of his son.Submitted as a bulletin by Keith Polk.
