MUSEUM QUALITY Vintage Hawaiian Antique Quilt c. 1900 "Vase of 'Iolani Palace"!
This MAGNIFICENT cotton blue and white Hawaiian cutout quilt is hand appliqued and hand quilted, dating back to the 1880-1900 era. The pattern is known as "Flower Vase of the ('Iolani) Palace," and was inspired by the etched urn pattern on the glass doors of the famous 'Iolani Palace built by King Kalakaua between 1879 and 1883. The quilt embodies the strong nationalist feelings of native Hawaiians of the period. 'Iolani is Hawaiian for "bird of heaven."

The quilt measures 80" X 82" and is in very good condition, with faint surface dirt in places (I haven't tried to clean this one), subtle mellowing of the blue fabric, and no wear. The quilt feels strong and sturdy overall.
There is straight line quilting throughout at 5-6 stitches to the inch.
The back is white, the machine stitched binding is the same blue used in the interior, and the batting is thin. You can see cotton seed residue inside when you hold the quilt up to the light.
RARELY do you find AUTHENTIC Hawaiian quilts from this era, especially with such A DYNAMIC DESIGN and GREAT CONDITION!
