"An absolute gem of a book that I can remember reading in my childhood. It's now gone through two generations of my family and is poised for a third. An entertaining story, but with easy vocabulary, it tells a rollicking tale of a valiant yacht crew trying to transport a shipment of gold through danger, storms, and the titular pirates. Good planning, hard work, the creative use of diving suits, and wasp nests all come together to save the day. The illustrations are superbly detailed and realistic. I can't recommend this highly enough for a beginning reader (boy or girl)." [a private review]

Herman Beeson Vestal (1916-2007) was American artist and illustrator. He became interested in art during his military service. His sketches and watercolors were included in exhibitions of Coast Guard Combat Art, which received press attention.

Since the late 1940s he created illustrations for pulp magazine, advertising, Sience Fiction and Western books. His artwork was included in the 1954 annual art exhibition of Salmagundi Club. His watercolors were singled out for exceptional praise by the editors of American Artist Magazine, which reproduced one of his paintings on their May 1954 cover. During the 1960s he illustrated several young adult and children's books.
