Virgin and Child, Attributed to Ambrosius Benson
Attributed to Ambrosius Benson
Lombardy (?) late 15th century - before 1550 Bruges
Virgin and Child
oil on panel
panel: 16¾ by 12¾ in.; 42.5 by 32.4 cm.
framed: 22 by 18 in.; 55.9 by 45.7 cm.
Condition Report:
The panel consists of single plank that is flat, stable, and beveled on the top, bottom, and part of the left edge of the reverse. The image reads very well beneath clear varnish with thin glazes retained in the veil and the still life. No retouching or repairs are obvious to the naked eye. Under UV inspection, retouching is visible as a larger spot on the Virgin's knee and in the darker wood tones of the table at the lower right corner, and scattered small spots are visible in the flesh tones of both figures and in the Virgin's red cape. The painting is in overall good condition, it has been nicely restored and should hang in its present state. Offered in an ebonized wood frame with gilt inner liner.
