Nach einem Geschichtsstudium an der Karlsuniversität in Prag und der Verpflichtung zur Zwangsarbeit für das Nazi-Regime als Werftarbeiter und zum Kriegseinsatz, Besuch der privaten Zeichenschule von Emanuel Frinta. Erste internationale Erfolge erzielte Vlastimil Benes ab den 1960er Jahren. Seine künstlerische Entwicklung verlief in den Nachkriegsjahren vom expressiven Malstil hinzu einem poetischen, von Ruhe und Melancholie geprägten Realismus in von Brauntönen dominierter Farbpalette. Erste internationale Erfolge erzielte Vlastimil Benes ab den 1960er Jahren besonders mit seinen lyrischen Landschaften, die heimatliche Motive aufgreifen, in ihrer Reduziertheit und Stimmung aber an die seichte Hügellandschaft der Toskana erinnern.

Benes first studied history at the Charles University in Prague before being obliged carry out forced labour for the Nazi regime as a shipyard worker and then conscripted to the war. Following this ordeal, he began attending Emanuel Frinta's private drawing school. Vlastimil Benes achieved his first international successes as of the 1960s. His artistic development in the post-war years was from an expressive style of painting to a poetic realism characterized by calm and melancholy in a colour palette dominated by brown tones. Vlastimil Benes achieved his first international successes from the 1960s onwards, especially with his lyrical landscapes. Although these works draw upon motifs from his Czech homeland, in their formal reduction and mood they are more reminiscent of the hilly landscapes of Tuscany
