-> Constantin-François Chasseboeuf de La Giraudais (1757 - 1820) , known as Volney, was a French philosopher and orientalist.

After inheriting a few pounds (currency of the time) , Volney embarked on a journey to Egypt then to Syria where he discovered numerous tribes among whom he lived for a certain time. Before that, he learned Arabic at the Collège de France then in Lebanon in the Coptic convent of Mar-Hanna.

Strengthened by his experience and his discoveries, he returned to France and published his work "Voyage en Egypt et en Syria" in which he depicted the life and politics of the indigenous peoples he met. He borrowed his way of traveling and relating his travels from Herodotus since he was a great reader, and gained credibility upon his return to France thanks to his precise and authentic explanations.
