GUNTHER WERKS

Porsche specialist Gunther Werks is a passion project spun off from CEO Peter Nam's primary business. Mr. Nam and his friends shared passionate enthusiasm for Porsche's final air-cooled 911 series, the type 993, and they pondered what it would take to build the ultimate iteration of this beloved 911. Numerous firms have used the 911 as a basis for tuning over the years, ranging from mild tweaks to complete re-engineering from the bodyshell up. Gunther Werks, which falls into the latter category, was born from the idea of a "what if" Porsche never stopped building the 993 and what modern materials and engineering can do to maximize its potential. With Mr. Nam's experience in composites and engineering, the company was ideally equipped to develop the car almost entirely in-house, which is what they did with their Remastered 993.

Starting with a standard 993 coupe, Gunther Werks brings the car down to the last nut and bolt, stripping the body to a bare shell. The body is rebuilt with a staggering array of new carbon fiber panels - including bumpers, wings, quarters, decklids and even the roof, which are remade in lightweight, high-strength carbon fiber. Only the steel doors are retained for safety reasons. According to Gunther Werks, 80% of the cabin is bespoke, while the remaining 20% is made up of brand-new Porsche-supplied parts.

Under the carbon skin, engineers developed a bespoke suspension setup using adjustable coilovers with remote reservoirs, custom rear control arms, uprated anti-roll bars, special lightweight uprights, and even a hydraulic front-end lift system. The standard 3.6-liter air-cooled flat-six engine is handed over to Rothsport Road and Race in Sherwood, Oregon, and is summarily stripped down and rebuilt to 4-liter specification, with a litany of high-performance, race-spec equipment and forged internals. It is topped with a custom intake plenum based on the 996 GT3, MoTec Bi-Mode management, and individual throttle bodies. Rated in company literature at 430 horsepower, the magnificent engine sends power to the rear wheels via a Rothsport-built Getrag G50 6-speed transaxle with custom close-ratio gearing.

This astonishing detail comes together in a sorted and finely honed package. Showing it was more than just a pretty face, in 2020, a Gunther Werks 911 in the hands of ace Porsche pilot Randy Pobst lapped Weathertech Raceway, Laguna Seca, California in 1:30.99 – about two-tenths of a second off the time set by the formidable McLaren P1.

THE CAR OFFERED

Known as the Brooklyn Commission, this Gunther Werks 911 coupe is a stunning demonstration of the ultimate 993. Every inch of this breathtaking automobile shows the meticulous attention to detail paid by its builders. From the exquisite Voodoo Blue paintwork to the magnificent bespoke blue leather, Pepita houndstooth fabric, and carbon fiber cabin, it is a masterpiece of modern custom car design. Showing just over 4,000 miles at the time of cataloguing, it remains in superb condition throughout.

As with any Guther Werks commission, there are seemingly countless individual details and fittings that are unique to this project. Notable features of this car include the classic-style 5-spoke multi-piece alloys, bare carbon mirrors and decklid trim, exposed carbon stripes, and "Brooklyn Commission" door plates denoting it as 1 of 25 cars produced. The cabin is dominated by the gorgeous carbon sport seats, while other wonderful details include a pair of Heuer rally chronographs in a custom alloy plinth, neatly integrated Porsche radio head unit, and an Alcantara-trimmed carbon steering wheel. This is said to be the only Gunther Werks 993 with optional rear seats so you can take two additional brave friends along for the ride. The detail is astounding, with more unique touches and beautifully made components catching your eye with every tour around the car.

The 430+ horsepower 4-liter Rothsport engine sounds glorious from the moment it bursts to life to the top of its screaming 7,800rpm redline. This car has been used sparingly since completion and is beautifully fresh in virtually every regard. The extremely limited run of just 25 cars ensures exclusivity, and if you missed the opportunity to acquire one of these astonishing automobiles on the first go-round, the availability of the Brooklyn Commission coupe here in Miami represents a unique opportunity to acquire what is arguably the ultimate expression of Porsche's legendary 993.
