London, New York, and Melbourne, 1889. single volume, second edition as stated, 8vo. (193 x 140mm), publisher's green cloth, gilt lettering to spine, edges untrimmed, edited by G.T. Bettany, contemporary inscription dated August 25, 1938 to front free e/p., 16 full-page plates including portrait frontispiece with tissue guard, diagrams and a map of the River Amazon, 363pp., plus 4pp. publisher's adverts. at end: This second edition was initiated and produced as part of Ward's Minerva Library of Famous Books. Ward employed Bettany's scientific and literary knowledge to revise proof sheets of the original work. Bettany confirmed Wallace as the 'co -discoverer' with Charles Darwin of the principal of natural selection as the main agent in the evolution of species. (1)
