Inscribed on underside of box "This Box Made by Thos. Goddard at Newport, R.I. from a part of the Ship Endeavor, which Capt. Cook made the first Voyages around the World. It was given to me by my Brother Joseph P. Hazard of Newport, R.I. AD 1850. Isaac Peace Hazard".
Height 2.75". Length 6". Width 3.25".
Reference:
A pipe box in the collection of Yale University Art Gallery is similarly inscribed, indicating it was made by Thomas Goddard from the stern post of the Endeavor, and branded "JPH" for Joseph Peace Hazard (1807-1892). The Endeavor was repaired about 1788 in Newport, and one of her timbers was planted at the corner of Mill and Spring Streets. According to Rhode Island Marine Archeology Project website that has documented Cook's vessels the Endeavor and the Resolution: "For nearly 200 years it was thought that La Liberte, the vessel that was abandoned in the Newport in 1793, had been the Endeavor. We now know that La Liberte was probably Cook's Resolution, which means that the artifacts in private hands and museum collections that came from this ship are mislabeled. The La Liberte ex Endeavor identification has been accepted for so long that it is entrenched in past literature. It is important to remember that these earlier artifacts can be used for contemporary comparisons but not as diagnostic materials for the identification of the transport Lord Sandwich ex Endeavor.".
