WANG DUO (1592-1652), ATTRIBUTED TO, CHINESE HANDSCROLL OF LANDSCAPE AND CALLIGRAPHY

[ translate ]

A Chinese handscroll attributed to Wang Duo (1592-1652), combining landscape and calligraphy. At the beginning of the scroll is a depiction of Jiangnan landscape, featuring green layered mountains emerging amid wispy clouds, trees partially screening the scenery, and winding riverbanks. Distant peaks and nearby valleys interplay between solid form and empty space. Rocks are rendered with gentle texture strokes, ink modulated skillfully between dark and pale tones to create a fresh, expansive mood, compressing the scenery of Jiangnan hills within this narrow scroll. The middle and latter sections are purely calligraphic. The brushwork surges dynamically as if in flight.
Ink on paper, handscroll.
Image: 30 x 366 cm.

Note: The work bears an inscription in the name of Wang Duo, with seal marks. With a label bearing an inscription. Additional colophons are present.

Provenance: By repute, from an important private collection.

Gustav Ecke (1896-1971) was a German art historian and scholar of Chinese art. He joined Amoy University in 1923, later taught at Qinghua University and Fujen University in Beijing, and was associated with the National Institute of Architecture. He was a pioneering scholar of Chinese hardwood furniture and published Chinese Domestic Furniture in 1944. In 1945 he married artist and scholar Tseng Yu-Ho (Zeng Youhe). The couple moved to Hawaii in 1949, where Ecke served as curator of Chinese art at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and as professor of Asian art at the University of Hawaii from 1950 to 1966.
