WARREN SHEPPARD (NJ, 1848-1937)

Luminist Coastal Sunrise, Distant Schooner, oil on canvas, signed lower right, circa 1890, in vintage deep cove gold gesso frame, OS: 24 1/2" x 29 1/2", SS: 12" x 17". Cleaned and relined.Sheppard was born in Greenwich, New Jersey and lived in that area most of his life. He studied under Dutch Maritime artist Mauritz Frederick Hendrick de Haas, who had moved to America, settling in New York in 1858. He spent summers in New Hampshire, painting seascapes off Isles of Shoals. He was also known as a racing yachts designer and navigator. Provenance: From a Private Collection.
