IRVING, WASHINGTON. The Life of George Washington. New York: G. P. Putnam & Co., 1855-1859. The Large Paper Quarto edition, number 45 of 110 large paper sets. Nicely bound in three-quarters reddish orange morocco gilt by Maurin, the covers with gilt rules, the spines stamped with an eagle motif and lettered in gilt with raised bands, marbled endpapers, the top edges gilt. 11 3/4 x 9 inches (30 x 22 cm); with frontispieces and engraved titles in each volume, profusely illustrated with plates and maps, about 47 of which are hand-colored and on India paper mounted. A very fine set, some minor toning or stray spots, the hand-coloring fine and dark, minor shelfwear to the bindings.
