W/C Portrait of a Lady- Signed

[ translate ]

Title: W/C Portrait of a Lady- Signed
Provenance: Our watercolor portrait of a lady seated in a high back upholstered chair, holding a book, is signed, over an impressed mark, by the English artist Richard Dighton, who is listed in Davenport's Art Reference Book, the bible of artist's history. The lady is well dressed and wearing a bonnet and the detail is excellent. On the back in very faint pencil can be made out "Lady _________" and other detail including the date of the painting, 1837. In an ink frame with a monogram, again hard to see, is where she died on March 6, 1840. Apparently this lady was of wealth and, perhaps, royalty. The portrait is in a beautiful figured wood frame with a gilt liner, original wavy glass and a brass hanging ring. The pictures have slight reflections from the camera. The frame measures 11 3/4" x 13 3/4" and the sight size is 8 1/2" x 10 1/2". It is in excellent condition but does have some flaking along the bottom. This is a wonderful folk art painting, signed by a well known artist. Inv. 3299
