WEDGWOOD FAIRYLAND LUSTRE PORCELAIN BOWL, octagonal form, featuring images of sprites, goblins, and other mystical creatures, having a daytime scene to interior with a whirlpool to center and exterior with a darkened sky. Gilt-printed urn mark with "WEDGWOOD / * / ENGLAND" and hand-brushed "Z4968" to underside. Designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones for Wedgwood, Etruria, England. Circa 1920. 4 3/8" H, 8 7/8" D rim.
Catalogue Note: Susannah Margaretta "Daisy" Makeig-Jones (1881-1945) began working at Wedgwood in 1909 as an apprentice china painter. She quickly advanced to staff designer in 1911. Makeig-Jones developed her magical and imaginative Fairyland Lustre line in 1915, a welcome escape from the First World War that had started in Europe a year earlier. Her lines of wares became a bestseller at Wedgwood through the 1920s. Fairyland Lustre was discontinued in 1929 due to the growing popularity of more modern styles and by 1931, Makeig-Jones was asked to retire. She spent her last years in Conisbrough, a town in South Yorkshire, passing away at the age of 63.
