WEDGWOOD FAIRYLAND LUSTRE RECTANGULAR PLAQUE, 'THE STUFF THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF'
WEDGWOOD FAIRYLAND LUSTRE RECTANGULAR PLAQUE, 'THE STUFF THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF' circa 1930, recorded as pattern no. F3080, designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones, rectangular, depicting a magical sunset over a mountainous seascape, with two oared sailboats rowing towards an exotic shore, predominantly enriched in shades of burnt orange, blue and green, h: 15 1/4 x w: 11 in.; within a giltwood frame, h: 23 x w: 19 in.
Provenance: With Muriel Polikoff, Philadelphia, PA, 1998.
Jeffrey Milkins Collection, no. 285.
Catalogue Note:
For a discussion on this pattern and an example from the David Newbon Collection, see Una des Fontaines, 'Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre: The works of Daisy Makeig-Jones', pp. 219-220, pl. 52. Here noted that this design is unique in that it contains two nudes, a seductive figure at the left wearing only a necklace and a grief-stricken winged figure at the right, between them is a baby riding on the crest of a wave. "The main difference in colour between this plaque and the first one is that the standing nude is black; the brazen sky and mountains are a deep Flame or burnt orange shade, the shoreline has turned violet and a green bow curves over a blue, white-crested wave: the baby is yellow."
Exhibitions: The Hammond Museum, North Salem, in collaboration with The Wedgwood Society of New York, 'All about Wedgwood': [exhibition] May13-October 28, 1984 (label).
Daughters of the American Revolution Museum, Washington, D.C., catalogue of the exhibit, â Wedgwood 250 Years of Innovation and Artistryâ , 2 October 2009 - 27 February 2010, p. 92, pl. 5.25.
