WEDGWOOD LIGHT-BLUE SOLID JASPERWARE TWO-HANDLED 'BORGHESE' VASE AND COVER

WEDGWOOD LIGHT-BLUE SOLID JASPERWARE TWO-HANDLED 'BORGHESE' VASE AND COVER late 18th/19th Century, impressed uppercase mark and 2 to base, modeled by John Devaere after the Antique marble, of krater form, the conical cover with artichoke finial radiating lotus blossoms, applied in white relief with a continuous Bacchanalian festival scene, within grapevine and classical borders, on a fluted circular socle foot and square base, h: 18 1/2 in.

Catalogue Note:
After rediscovery in 1566, the monumental Athenian marble vase was later displayed at the Villa Borghese, Rome, circa 1645. In 1808, the Prince Camillo Borghese sent the vase to his brother-in-law, Napoleon Bonaparte. Today it is displayed in the Daru Gallery, Louvre Museum, Paris. Josiah Wedgwood owned a copy of the François Perrier (1590â 1650) book of engravings titled, 'Segmenta nobilium signorum et statuarum que temporis que dentem invidium evase, Paris and Rome' from which he is thought to have studied the design.
