Description:

CGC certified: Good/VG (3.0). Cream to off-white pages. Classic Bernard Baily cover. Classic Basil Wolverton "Swamp Monster" story; other stories by Edd Smalle and Walter Palais. GPAnalysis: A 3.0 sold for $4692 in June 2021, and a 3.5 sold for $5040 the same month. PBA sold a 7.5 copy for $19,200 in 2020.

One of the most infamous covers of the pre-Code era, depicting a mad scientist removing the brain from a gory severed head. Every detail of Bernard Baily's morbid masterpiece amplifies the queasy sense of horror: the gaping eye sockets; the rotted, fleshless nose; the jagged incision of the craniotomy; the way the head lolls in the vile, soupy mixture like the devil's own dumpling. Lurid, distasteful and unseemly, with a vague whiff of moral obscenity: it's everything one wants in a pre-Code mag.

Publisher Stanley Morse was described by Taschen Books as "the ultimate fly-by-night publisher, and creator of some of the most extreme horror comic books of the early fifties." Years later, when asked about the content of his seedy horror mags, Morse shrugged: "I don't know what the hell I published. I didn't care. I never read the things." — David Hadju, The Ten Cent Plague: The Great Comic-Book Scare and How It Changed America. FSG: 2008, p. 190.

A limited edition of 150 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues is available. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $30, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Ten of the 15 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com.

Consignments welcome for PBA's December 2021 Comic Book sale. Top prices for Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age, Silver Age, original art and ephemera. Send inquiries to ivan@pbagalleries.com.
