WELLES ORSON: (1915-1985)
WELLES ORSON: (1915-1985) American actor and film director, the recipient of an Honorary Academy Award in 1970. T.L.S., Orson, one page, 8vo, n.p., 17th February 1964, to Leonard Lyons (´Dear Lennie´). Welles commences his letter by stating ´I see from your columns that you have been back in our old stamping grounds in Vienna. I wish I´d known, I would have tried to meet you somewhere - - in Paris for instance, I was there just a few days before you´ and continues ´Could you please get this letter (no longer present) to Al Capp. I think his strip is syndicated by United Features, but I´m not sure´. Some light, minor foxing to the edges, otherwise VG
Leonard Lyons (1906-1976) American newspaper columnist for the New York Post where his columns, The Lyons Den, became a New York institution covering theatre, movies, politics and art.
Al Capp (1909-1979) American cartoonist best known for the satirical comic strip L´il Abner (1934-77).
Welles famously visited Vienna in 1948 to film The Third Man, where his character, Harry Lime, delivered the iconic ´cuckoo clock´ speech atop the Riesenrad Ferris wheel. His memorable performance forever linked Welles to the shadows and cobblestone streets of post-war, divided Vienna.
