WESTERN ASIATIC BRONZE FURNITURE FITTING WITH GOAT
c. 1200 to 800 BC. Western Asiatic, Luristan culture. An attractive cast bronze furniture fitting. The piece comprises two curled feet which support a pair of ribbed legs joined by three horizontal crossbars. Atop the legs stands a magnificent integral figurine of a goat, who stands with majestic, long, curving horns. In Bronze Age cultures, aristic depictions of goats served to emphasise the power and prestige of the owners, as they were considered noble animals and hunting them was largely the preserve of aristocrats and/or royalty.
