WIDE (THE) WORLD MAGAZINE. AN ILLUSTRATED MONTHLY OF TRUE NARRATIVE: ADVENTURE, TRAVEL, CUSTOMS AND SPORT. LONDON. Newnes, ltd. 1898 to 1911. 19 vols. - AA.VV.
In quarto, in 19 volumes. Half leather in brown chagrin, gilt title on the spine, with the supralibros of the Italian polyhedral Queen Margherita of Savoy (1851-1926). These volumes contain thousands of black-and-white photographs of great scientific and ethnographic value, depicting peoples and ethnic groups never before seen. This collection includes parts of the famous story "The Adventures of Louis de Rougemont", among others; described as "the most amazing story a man ever lived to tell", it narrates the trajectory of a man who spent thirty years in the interior of Australia (later exposed as a hoax). Lavishly illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs and other illustrations in the text, by various artists including Terence Cuneo, Gordon Browne and William Barnes Wollen, among others. Contributors include Fred Singer, M.L. Lindsay, G.A. Wade and Edward Walton, among others.
On the endpapers are pasted the ex-libris of Queen Helena of Italy. The 1st volume was still bound in Monza, by Ghezzi, but all the other 18 volumes were bound in Rome, by the famous Carlo Glingler, as indicated by the gilt stamp on the rear flyleaf. The most important magazine of the Victorian era.
