LOT NOTES
A draftsman and genre painter, Wilhelm Gause was born on March 27, 1853 in Krefeld, Rhein. He began his art training as a student of Eduard von Gebhardt and, from 1871, at the academy in Dusseldorf. In 1879, he moved to Vienna, where he made his living primarily as an illustrator. Ten years later, in 1889, he received an honorary dipolma from the international watercolor exhibition in Dresden. While his best known works are his Genre scenes of everyday folk life, he also frequently created gouache sheets as templates for woodcuts.
