[ translate ]

Property from a Private Collection, Ireland WILLEM KOEKKOEK (DUTCH 1839-1895) Dutch Street Scene signed 'William Koekkoek' (lower right) oil on canvas 46 x 38 cm PROVENANCE: Purchased by the father of the present owner in the 1970s Koekkoek was born in Amsterdam into a family of artists. His father, Hermanus Koekkoek, was known for his marine depictions, and his grandfather, Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek, was a well-known Dutch artist and draftsman whose works may now be seen at the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam) as well as the Dordrechts Museum and the Museum Jan Cunen in Oss. Willem Koekkoek and his three brothers received their first art lessons from their father. He also received training as an architect, which is perhaps what influenced his choice of subject matter throughout his artist career. Koekkoek first exhibited his works in 1859, and following this he held yearly showings at the Royal Academy of Art and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam between 1865 and 1894. The artist had two sons who also followed the family tradition; Marinus Adrianus became an illustrator specializing in birds, and his brother, Hermanus Wilem became a painter of military subjects.Click here to share:Request a condition report
