WILLIAM ALAN MENZIES (BRITISH, 1865–1929) after E. Fuchs, half length portrait of Field Marshal the Right Honourable Garnet Joseph (1833–1913), Viscount Wolseley, KP, GCB, OM, GCMG, Colonel in Chief of the Royal Irish Regiment, depicting Wolseley in ceremonial uniform with decorations, inscribed verso "Lord Wolseley F.M 1905 after E Fuchs by w a Menzies, with artist's label, 94 by 74cm, in a plain gilt frame, 116 by 95cm.

Notes: One of Victorian Britain’s foremost military commanders and reformers, Wolseley served as Commander-in-Chief of the British Army from 1895 to 1901 and played a leading role in its modernisation. His national significance is reflected in the imposing bronze equestrian statue by Sir William Goscombe John at Horse Guards Parade, London. His extensive military career encompassed service in Burma, the Crimea, India and China, and command of expeditions in Canada and Africa. His reputation for efficiency entered everyday language through the expression “All Sir Garnet”, meaning everything was in order. His influence extended into popular culture: he was an inspiration for Major-General Stanley in Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, whose celebrated song describes “the very model of a modern Major-General”. From the Irish branch of the Wolseley family, the sitter adds a significant military and cultural connection to this ancestral collection. The portrait offers particular interest to collectors of British military history, Victorian portraiture and Gilbert and Sullivan memorabilia.

Condition: The painting has been folded at the top to fit the frame, minor scuff top left, scuffs to frame.
